Casio Releases EXILIM EX-H5

Casio Electronics Co. Ltd presents two new models in the EXILIM product family. Moving scenes at a distance or difficult lighting conditions are a barrier to taking good photos for many cameras. But the perfect moment pays no attention to ideal photo conditions. The new EXILIM models successfully meet this challenge. Whereas the EX-H5 expands the successful segment of hi-zoom cameras at CASIO, the EX-FH25 combines the high-speed technology with the new "high sensitivity CMOS sensor" for high-speed photo and film sequences in a quality never seen before. Both digital cameras can also record HD videos in a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

Casio Europe has released the Exilim EX-H5 compact superzoom with 10x (24-240mm equiv.) zoom lens. The 12.1MP image stabilized camera comes with a 2.7 inch LCD, faster Exilim Engine 5.0 processor and features 720p HD video recording. The camera will be available from the end of this month at a suggested retail price of £149.99. The company has also announced the Exilim EX-FH25 superzoom, previously available in other markets, is now available in the Europe at an SRP of £399.99.

Samsung I5801, I5500 and Acer Stream Leaked

The annual Google I/O conference is off to a nice start with a few surprising handset leaks. Samsung I5801 and I5500 were spotted along with a bunch of other known and unknown mobile phones, such as the Acer Liquid Stream, which sees daylight for the first time.

And while we know a few bits and pieces about the I5801 and I550, there's hardly anything we know about the touchscreen equipped smartphone Liquid Stream, except for the fact that it runs the Android OS.

Google I/O 2010
Acer Liquid Stream

As for the I5801 and I5500, they have already made their first public appearances… a few times. The Samsung I5801 (a.k.a. Galaxy 3) comes with a TouchWIZ-ed Eclair in the pocket as well as a GPS receiver, microSD card slot, 3.5mm audio jack and support for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It also features a 3-megapixel snapper able to shoot QVGA videos.

The I5500 is said to be part of the Corby family and to be based on the Android v2.1 too. It should pack Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support as well and to have a GPS receiver on board. The I5500 is expected to sell for around 200 euro which sounds like a fair price for an Android-powered device sporting all those features.

There is still no information of the expected availability and price of the other two.

Versace Unique ; touch and fashion

Yet another fashion brand joined the luxury mobile phones bandwagon today. Versace announced their Unique touch-driven phone, which was developed in cooperation with ModeLabs Group and LG.

The face of the hand-crafted (did you really expect something else?) Versace Unique is constructed from ceramic or handmade lacquers, while the frame options include 18K yellow gold finish or 316L grade stainless steel inlay.

Versace Unique

The leather back is embossed with the all too familiar Medusa head logo. The Versace Unique sapphire crystal screen is the largest single piece of this high-tech material ever produced for consumers. Scratch-resistant and all, it should provide the ultimate protection for the Unique 3-inch touchscreen of yet unknown resolution.

The other features of the Versace Unique, which geeks might find interesting are its 5 megapixel camera and 3G support. The (probably ridiculously overpriced) handset will start shipping next month.

Samsung Champ C3300K

Samsung isn't letting high end gadgets like the Galaxy S to go to their heads. The newly announced Samsung C3300K Champ will bring affordable touchscreen experience to developing markets and Samsung hopes it will become as popular as one of their bestsellers - the Samsung S5230 Star.

The Samsung C3300K Champ takes the Corby formula and simplifies it even further. The Champ is relatively compact and has a 2.4" QVGA resistive touchscreen - marginally smaller than the one on the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini. The phone runs TouchWiz Lite, which features a homescreen with widgets arranged in a 3x3 grid.

The Samsung C3300 Champ is an affordable touch phone

Another part that seems integral to the TouchWiz experience lately is the social networking integration, so it's included in the Samsung C3300K Champ UI too along with Samsung Apps integration and Java support.

The Samsung C3300K Champ packs a 1000mAh battery, which is enough for 666 hours of standby and 12 hours of talk time. The durable battery will last hours of multimedia playback - radio or music, with 3D sound effects through the stereo speakers.

A microSD card slot for cards up to 8GB and a 3.5mm audio jack complement the multimedia features of the Champ.

As far as connectivity is concerned, the C3300K Champ offers the necessary basics - quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.1 and USB. It also features a 1.3MP camera, which can also record QCIF videos at 15fps.

The Samsung C3300K Champ will launch in June and it will be available in Middle East, Latin America, Asia and Europe. The Champ will come in deep black, espresso brown, sweet pink or chic white color versions. There's no mention of price though, besides it being "affordable".

LG Panther Shows Up again

Another good picture of the WP7-powered LG Panther surfaced today. It shows nothing new, but finally get an image under some proper lighting.

The phone date points 12 May, which means this LG Panther is as close to the final version as it gets at this stage. The design of the keys below the display has slightly changed over the previously leaked hands-on materials. The Panther meets the WP7 Chassis 2 specs requirements and will pack a sliding QWERTY keyboard.

Here is a quick refresh on the LG Panther rumored specs: 1GHz or faster processor, WVGA or better capacitive display, at least 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, possible HD video recording, sliding full QWERTY keyboard and an all-round connectivity package.

Another Corby Will Runs Android: Samsung I5500 Corby

Samsung Corby phones in a variety of shapes and sizes, but now rumor has it that a new member of the group - the Samsung I5500 Corby - will run Android and become the first Corby to earn a smartphone degree.

I don't know much about this new Corby, except that it recently got a Wi-Fi certification for the b/g/n protocols. It received FCC certification as well, so we're looking at 3G, Bluetooth and GPS for the Samsung I5500. The camera resolution is unknown, but it probably won't be more than 3MP.

The rumors add Android 2.1 Eclair and Corby branding to the mix and an expected price of 200 euro putting it at the low end of the price range for an Android phone.

I don't have a photo of the Samsung I5500 Corby yet - the photo on the left is a quick mockup. In-the-wild photos can't be far behind though.

HTC Mondrian Will Pack 1,3GHz Processor and Run WP7 ??

Not so long ago, mobile phone CPUs reached the 1GHz milestone, but HTC is already looking ahead. Info on a new device called the HTC Mondrian showed up, presumably powered by 1.3GHz Snapdragon processor.

Over at the XDA-Developers forums, people have been digging through files from a leaked ROM for a Windows Phone 7 device, called the HTC Mondrian. Inside are references to some pretty amazing stuff.

For one, the CPU listed is QSD8650A or B - a Snapdragon clocked at 1.3GHz and with support for both GSM and CDMA 3G - HSDPA and EV-DO. Continuing through the potential specs for the HTC Mondrian, there's screen is 4.3" with WVGA resolution - the same as the one on the HTC HD2 and the HTC EVO 4G.

There's also a mention of a Qualcomm Wi-Fi adapter, an FM radio and a digital compass.

Another interesting thing that came out of the ROM is the picture on the left. It's obviously a render and not a photo, and probably a generic image for a Windows Phone 7 device, rather than the HTC Mondrian. Either way, the final design probably won't be too different - big touchscreen and the keys mandated by WinPho 7.

The ROM is for a Cingular USA device, but with GSM/CDMA support, we'll probably be seeing the same device on GSM carriers too. Unlike the HTC Wildfire, which was announced today, the info on the HTC Mondrian is not official, so take it with a pinch of salt.

HTC WildFire Announced, The Mini Version of HTC Desire

Today HTC announced a new Android powered device - the budget Wildfire. It's sort of a mini version of the already available Desire, packing Android 2.1, Sense UI and capacitive touchscreen.

The specs sheet is pretty standard - a 3.2-inch QVGA capacitive display, Qualcomm MSM7225 528 MHz CPU, 384MB RAM plus 512MB ROM, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G with HSDPA support, Bluetooth, 3.5mm audio jack and microSD card slot. The trackpad recently adopted by HTC is also on board. Sounds quite like the HTC Legend, doesn't it.

HTC Wildfire

The Android 2.1 in the Wildfire will be Sense skinned, social-powered and will pack brand-new app sharing widget for posting your impressions on mobile applications via Twitter, SMS or email.

Even if we called it a Desire mini, the Wildfire is only 13mm shorter than the HTC Desire, while the rest of the measurements are the same.

Unfortunately, our experience is that Android OS looks poor on QVGA displays and that would be especially true on a screen that big.

HTC Wildfire will be available in four colors

HTC Wildfire is expected to hit the shelves across Europe and Asia in Q3 this year. It will be available in four different colors for 300 euro.

MOTOROI coming to UK, 8MP camera, 720p, Android 2.1

The Motorola Sholes rumors flip-flopped between specs and countries, but it turns out there are several versions. One with 8MP camera and 720p video recording is coming to the UK with some other specs updates as well, compared to the South Korea-bound MOTOROI.

We've seen this specific model under quite a few different names. First, it was the Motorola Sholes Tablet in a roadmap, then the XT701 for China, then of course the MOTOROI for South Korea. They all had specs variations - in the camera department mostly.

Now, Motorola have confirmed that another variant on the XT701 / MOTOROI recipe will be coming to the UK - but with an 8MP camera rather than 5MP, while still keeping the 720p video recording and the xenon flash.

Motorola XT701 Motorola XT701 Motorola XT701 Motorola XT701 Motorola XT701
Motorola XT701 - the UK version should look very similar • Image source

The UK version of the MOTOROI will feature a faster CPU (no specific frequency was mentioned though). Other notable features include the mini-HDMI port, Android 2.1, the MOTOBLUR interface (carriers can choose not to use it though) and faster HSPA.

The new Motorola Sholes or whatever they name it should help Motorola fight off high-end Android handsets from HTC and Sony Ericsson, which offer faster CPUs and better cameras than the Motorola MILESTONE.

The Swivel QWERTY Moto FlipOut Rumored

Motorola FLIPOUT seems to be another social-oriented smartphone with clever design and flipping QWERTY keyboard. It runs Android 2.1 and features the latest MOTOBLUR UI.

It seems the BLACKFLIP sells good enough, because Motorola are on the way to release another strange QWERTY-packed device. The quadratic FLIPOUT is still unannounced but today's leak reveals a device with swiveling QWERTY pad that despite the smallish size, manages to pack all the needed keys plus a D-pad.

The rest of the FLIPOUT specs are rumored to be a 3 megapixel Kodak camera, a 2.8-inch touchscreen, a 700 MHz processor, 256MB RAM and 512MB ROM plus a microSD card slot. More advanced wireless connectivity options - Wi-Fi and 3G - won't be supported.

Android 2.1 enhanced with the latest MOTOBLUR UI 1.5 supporting Live Widgets will power the FLIPOUT.

All this information is based on a reliable source according to Gizmodo Brazil and Motorola FLIPOUT is expected to launch in mid-June. The rumored price for the unlocked device with pre-paid plan is 310 euro.

I hope the FLIPOUT is not bound for Brazil only as several other manufacturers have dedicated products for the Brazilian market.

NEX-3 and NEX-5 Are Unveiled By Sony

As expected, Sony has unveiled the NEX-3 and NEX-5 mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. The two cameras are both built around the 14.6 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor announced at the PMA 2010 exhibition in February and the new, mirrorless E-mount. Both offer high-resolution tilt/flip screens, fast continuous shooting and HD video capture, with 720p from the NEX-3 and 1080i, AVCHD from the NEX-5. Also announced are three E-mount lenses: a 16mm F2.8 pancake, offering a 24mm equivalent field-of-view, a standard 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 stabilized kit zoom, with a 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 stabilized superzoom to follow. We've been using both NEXs for a while and have delved beyond the raw specifications to prepare hands-on previews of both models.

DSLR picture quality that won’t weigh you down

Sony’s compact, easy to use NEX-5 and NEX-3 with interchangeable lenses and HD video

  • New α digital cameras with DSLR picture quality and responsive shooting
  • World’s smallest and lightest* interchangeable lens digital camera (NEX-5)
  • 14.2 effective megapixels Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor
  • 1080i HD movie recording (NEX-5) with stereo sound, fast and silent autofocus
  • Intuitive new interface with Help Guide and Shooting Tips
  • E-mount lens system compatible with α DSLR lenses (with optional Mount Adaptor)
  • Sweep Panorama with 3D capability**

Now photographers can enjoy the superlative picture quality and shooting responses prized by DSLR users in two beautifully compact new cameras that are brilliantly easy to use.

Joining the α family, the NEX-5 and NEX-3 team DSLR-quality imaging with the convenience of interchangeable lenses in a sleek new design that slips easily into a jacket pocket or bag. In contrast with conventional DSLR models, the ‘mirrorless’ construction shrinks the thickness of both cameras to just 24.2mm (NEX-5) at their slimmest point. As a luxurious extra refinement, the NEX-5 features a tough yet light-weight magnesium body, making it the world’s smallest and lightest interchangeable lens digital camera.

At the heart of both cameras is a newly-developed Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor with a resolution of 14.2 effective megapixels. Far larger than the sensor inside conventional compact cameras, its key to the extremely low image noise and creative defocus effects that are familiar to DSLR users.

Still and video image quality is further refined by the powerful BIONZ processor that ensures speedy DSLR-style shooting reflexes with quick, precise autofocus and minimal shutter lag. Both cameras can also capture fast-moving action with a high-speed burst of full-resolution images at up to 7fps (AF/AE fixed from first frame).

An elegant, uncluttered user interface – featuring a new ‘never get lost’ menu – makes the powerful creative possibilities of the NEX-5 and NEX-3 accessible to enthusiasts and step-up users alike. Shooting parameters are easily accessed via an intuitive control wheel and two soft keys. Turning the control dial, for example, allows depth of focus changes to be previewed ‘live’ on the LCD***, giving effortless control over beautiful, pro-style portraits. Further help for novice users is provided by on-screen shooting tips and a friendly help guide.

Images and camera settings are displayed on the big, bright 7.5cm (3”), Xtra Fine LCD with TruBlack technology that tilts up or down for comfortable viewing in any shooting position. The screen features an auto-brightness function for excellent visibility, even when you’re outdoors. TruBlack screen technology enables an even more vivid, high-contrast view of images and camera settings.

Compatibility with a wide range of interchangeable lenses dramatically expands the artistic possibilities of the E-mount camera system.

Ideal for everyday shooting, the low-profile E 16mm F/2.8 ‘pancake’ lens (SEL16F28) minimises bulk when the camera is being carried in a coat pocket. Its field of view can be boosted even further by the VCL-ECU1 Ultra Wide Converter and VCL-ECF1 Fisheye Converter that deliver high-definition optical performance in a sleek, co-ordinated design.

Featuring in-lens SteadyShot image stabilisation for clearer handheld images, the E 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 zoom (SEL1855) is a perfect travel partner. The NEX-5 and NEX-3 are available in kit form with either lens, or as a double-lens kit that provides even greater shooting versatility. The NEX-5 can also be specified as a kit with the optional E 18-200 F/3.5-6.3 zoom that offers a powerful 11x magnification range plus Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation with Active Mode at wide angle for steadier movie shooting.

An optional LA-EA1 mount adaptor extends compatibility to the α family of 30 lenses and teleconverters, plus a huge range of other legacy A-mount lenses (Manual Focus only).

The NEX-5 and NEX-3 are also the first α cameras to offer the extra convenience of HD video recording. At the touch of a dedicated Movie REC button, the NEX-3 shoots HD video with stereo sound as compact MPEG4 files that are ideal for PC storage and web sharing. Full HD (1920 x 1080i) video captured by the NEX-5 as high-quality AVCHD files can be enjoyed on a connected HD television. As an option, the smart accessory terminal on both cameras accepts the compact ECM-SST1 Stereo Microphone that captures a high-quality soundtrack for your HD videos.

The NEX-5 and NEX-3 are the first α cameras featuring Sweep Panorama. Just press the shutter button and swing the camera side-to-side or up and down. A high-speed burst of frames is stitched together automatically to create detail-packed 23 megapixel panoramas with a 226 degree effective angle of view****. Panoramic files can also be enjoyed in stunning 3D on compatible BRAVIA™ 3D televisions.*****

As previously introduced on the DSLR-A550, Auto HDR has been further refined. The NEX-5 and NEX-3 can now shoot a high-speed burst of three images at different exposure values that are electronically combined in the camera. This produces a single High Dynamic Range image with extended highlight and shadow detail.

Both cameras come supplied with a super-compact clip-on flash that attaches via the smart accessory terminal when needed for low-light shooting. Other optional accessories include the FDA-SV1 Optical Viewfinder plus colour coordinated cases and shoulder straps.

The NEX-5 and NEX-3 system cameras from Sony are available from summer 2010.

Clamshell Bold 9670 Appeared Runs BB OS6

After the highly rumored BlackBerry Bold 9800 there is one more Bold waiting for its official announcement, the BlackBerry Bold 9670, company's latest clamshell. Apparently, it will also run the BlackBerry OS 6 and should roll out sometime this summer.

While the first BlackBerry slider, the Bold 9800, has been spotted lots of times (even on video), this is the first time we hear of RIM's latest flip, which, reportedly, will be the latest addition to the Bold series.

Besides being a fatty, the Bold 9670 is quite well equipped. Word on the street is that the new flip will run company's latest BlackBerry OS 6 and will support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The 9670 will also have a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with flash and a full QWERTY keyboard. Unlike the 9800, the Bold 9670 won't come with a touch sensitive main screen on board. The trackpad underneath is touch sensitive though.

And here comes the video demonstrating the new BlackBerry OS 6 on the Bold 9670:

The BlackBerry Bold 9670 is expected to become available in both GSM and CDMA flavors but there is no word on when exactly that is going to happen.

RICOH Lens P10 28-300 mm F3.5-5.6 Unveiled

Ricoh has unveiled the P10 28-300mm equivalent F3.5-5.6 VC lens module for the GXR system with a 1/2.3" back-illuminated CMOS sensor. The image-stabilized unit includes features such as RAW capture, HD video recording and 5 fps continuous shooting (120 fps at VGA). The P10 is the third module available for GXR users, with the A12 28 mm equivalent F2.5 prime lens module currently under development.

The company says that although the optical formula of the lens is the same as that of the CX3, the lens construction has been changed and the design 'optimized' to offer higher quality images. The lens module also makes use of revised image processing algorithms which can be communicated across to the GXR body as a firmware update when they are first connected.

The First 3D Capable Display Phone : Samsung W960

It was only in a matter of time before we see the first mobile phone with 3D-capable display and it’s hardly a surprise the device comes from Samsung. The SCH-W960 AMOLED 3D doesn’t require glasses for proper 3D visualization, but for now its availability is limited to the South Korean market.

The Samsung W960 AMOLED 3D is a CDMA mobile phone packing 3.2-inch AMOLED capacitive touch display with WQVGA resolution, 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera, 3G support with HSPA, DMB-T TV tuner, Bluetooth and microSD card slot. It’s powered by the proprietary Samsung TouchWiz 2.0.

The 3D capable display doesn’t require special glasses. There is a dedicated 3D shortcut key on the phone for switching on/off the 3D mode any time you want.

Samsung AMOLED 3D will be limited for Korea only through all the operators – SKT, KT and LGT. The device is expected to launch Q2 this year.

Ultra portable devices and projectors are probably the last frontier for 3D display technology. If you still haven't dipped your toes but you are curious, you should definitely check our blogpost on the Six ways you can get 3D technology in your home right now.

Motorola Shadow Will be Nexus 2 Or Droid 2?

The shady Motorola Shadow strikes again with more rumors - initially dubbed to become the Google Nexus Two, the device is now said to be called Motorola DROID2, with MB810 as a model number.

Yet other rumors say there are two devices - one with QWERTY, like the first render we saw, would be the Motorola Droid 2, while the Motorola Shadow (still potentially the Nexus Two), is without keyboard.

The Motorola Shadow as we first saw it • another shot of the Shadow (or Droid 2 or Nexus Two)

Two devices or not, the Motorola Shadow / Droid 2 / Nexus Two will have a 4.3" touchscreen with 854 x 480 pixels resolution, rumors say.

Also (and this comes with blurry photo proof), there's an 8MP camera with dual LED flash and HD video recording (most likely 720p) plus an HDMI out in the Motorola Shadow's future.

Other spec gossip includes the TI OMAP 3630 processor (possibly clocked at 720MHz), 512MB RAM, Android 2.1 with MOTOBLUR (or maybe v2.2 Froyo) in a very thin and light body.

Photo "proof" that the Motorola Shadow has an 8MP camera and an HDMI port

The only rumor that got its official confirmantion is the Wi-Fi b/g/n rating - the Motorola MB810 got its certification recently. The rest is uncertain to say the least.

Rumor-land puts the release date for some time in June for Verizon, but we'll probably see a Motorola DROID / MILESTONE situation and get the Motorola MB810 Droid 2 in GSM flavor too.

The Nexus Two situation is unclear (keyboard or no keyboard?), but the Nexus One for Verizon was dropped in favor of the HTC Incredible, so it might be GSM-only.

Blackberry Slider?!!

The BlackBerry Slider was absent from rumor-land for a while but it has returned along with some more photos. The BlackBerry Slider 9800 is shown running the BlackBerry OS 6, so it's still on track to becoming the first RIM phone with the new OS.

The photos are quire poor - but still, they confirm that the BlackBerry Slider (probably not its real model name) is running BlackBerry OS 6, though (quite expectedly) a pre-release version.

New photos of the BlackBerry Slider 9800 • old photos are clearer

BB OS 6 was expected, along with some other interesting bits - touchscreen, but no SurePress, and a 5MP camera with something called "liquid lens technology". This leak neither confirms nor denies any of that. They do show the BlackBerry Slider 9800 running on Rogers, so we're sure to get a GSM version.

I still don't know when the Slider is coming out though. However, if it will really be the first device to run OS v6, then the BlackBerry Slider 9800 should come out in Q3 at the earliest (when BB OS 6 is expected comes out).

The Cheap Nokia X2 Unveiled

Nokia Keep the new devices coming! The company has just announced their latest music-centric feature phone, the cheap Nokia X2.

The X2 will be based on the S40 platform and will come with dedicated music keys, stereo speakers and an FM radio with RDS and a built-in antenna. On top of that you get support for stereo Bluetooth and a 3.5mm audio output jack. Of course, there is also a hot-swappable microSDHC card slot.

The 13-mm thin Nokia X2 weighs only 81 g and packs a 2.2" screen of QVGA resolution and social network integration allowing its owners quick access to Facebook's services. The Nokia Messaging app will be preloaded as well.

On the aluminum back you'll find a 5-megapixel fixed-focus camera with video recording. That sure doesn't impress but, considering the low price tag, we're not surprised to hear that there is no autofocus.

Nokia X2 is expected to become available by the end of June at an estimated price of 85 euro before taxes and subsidies. There are two known color versions so far - Blue on Silver and Red on Black.
